US Vice President Kamala Harris will travel to Poland and Romania to assist eastern NATO allies amid the Russian conflict.

The upcoming trip includes stops to Warsaw and Bucharest. Harris will meet with the countries’ leaders to coordinate a response to Russia’s invasion and demonstrate support for Ukraine.

Harris also plans to discuss aiding Ukraine’s neighboring nations in the refugee crisis. So far, Poland has welcomed over one million Ukrainians fleeing from the conflict, and the US has more than doubled its military presence in Poland to 9,000 troops. The US expects Harris’s visit to demonstrate solidarity among the NATO Alliance.

Amid concerns that Russia may decide to launch missiles or aircraft against NATO allies in eastern Europe, the US is considering supplying these nations with air defense systems. The US has also pledged to come to the aid of the Baltic nations—including Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia—should Russia decide to attack. NATO is also considering establishing more permanent troops in the Baltic region. While the US has been hesitant to establish long-term deployments for fears of antagonizing Moscow, it will likely agree to do so given Russia’s increasing aggression.
