Indian government to meet to discuss winter parliament
The central government of India will convene an all-party meeting of the leaders of the lower and upper houses of parliament today ahead of the start of the winter session in New Delhi.
Led by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), the government-organized meeting will likely discuss the main issues to be raised in the final period of operations of India’s parliament this year. India’s lower and upper houses of parliament convene three times in a year—the Budget, Monsoon and Winter session, with the Winter session being the shortest in duration.
The meeting will be led by Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi who will bring forth the BJP’s plans to introduce 16 bills during the proceedings including the Trademarks (Amendment) Bill and amendments to the Forest Conservation Act. Discussions will also include strategizing India’s plan of action as G20 president after taking over from Indonesia on 1 December.
The opposition leaders attending will likely agree to the agenda set by the BJP however the upcoming session is also likely to include debates and a possible walking out on proceedings owing to the controversial introduction of the economically-weaker section’s reservation benefits in November.
