Arab League to meet on Gaza Reconstruction

Arab League gaza

The Arab League, joined by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, will meet in Cairo, Egypt, to formulate a post-war reconstruction plan for Gaza.

From today’s meeting, the Arab League intends to propose an alternative to President Trump’s ‘Gaza Rivera’ plan. The Arab League has already condemned the proposal of an American occupation reconstruction of Gaza. Rather, this emergency summit will continue the discussion on Gaza that started with the prior impromptu meeting in Riyadh last month. According to Guterres, topics on the agenda include de-escalating violence in the West Bank and outlining a framework for Gaza’s recovery and long-term stability. The preliminary Egyptian proposal includes three phases over the course of three to five years—beginning with immediate relief and rebuilding infrastructure and ending with a track to a two-state solution for an independent Palestine.

With mounting pressure from the ‘Gaza Rivera’ proposal, today’s meeting will be an important showcase of Arab coordination on the issue of Gaza. Any consensus among Arab countries will prove pivotal in the West and the Arab world reaching an agreement on Gaza. However, whether or not the parties can reach said understanding remains to be seen, especially considering the contentious attendance of new Syrian president Ahmed al-Sharaa. However, whatever Arab consensus on reconstruction may be reached will likely be spearheaded by Egypt and Qatar and modeled after the aforementioned Egyptian proposal. In the broader geopolitical landscape, the Arab League will hope to mitigate the potentiality of long-term regional conflict with Jerusalem through a solidarized position.
